Jane Eyre, an orphan, is taken in at a young age by her maternal uncle's family. On his deathbed, he makes his wife, Mrs. Reed, promise to take care of the child as if she were her own daughter. The woman cannot stand the presence of her niece and, together with her children, mistreats her continuously. Finally, Jane is expelled and sent to the rigid Lowood boarding school. Among the school's students, Jane becomes friends with the gentle Helen Burns, who, however, dies shortly thereafter due to her poor health. As an adult, Jane is hired as a governess for the little Adele Varens, pupil of Mr. Edward Rochester, the rich owner of the Thornfield Hall estate. Jane feels an affinity with her enigmatic employer and begins to feel a sincere affection for him without realizing that the man reciprocates. This feeling, however, seems to be hindered by a mystery, disturbing laughter, fires that have no explanation and friends from distant and exotic places come between the two protagonists, until Rochester's feelings for Jane become so strong that the man asks the girl to marry him. During the ceremony, a lawyer bursts in and declares that Rochester is already married and that his wife is still alive. Mr. Rochester finally confesses the truth: his wife lives in Thornfield, segregated because she is mentally ill and violent.
