शास्त्रों के अनुसार माघ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अमावस्या तिथि का बहुत महत्व है। इस वर्ष मौनी अमावस्या 21 फरवरी,शनिवार को है। इस अमावस्या तिथि को 'मौनी' कहने के पीछे यह मान्यता है कि इसी पावन तिथि पर मनु ऋषि का जन्म हुआ था और मनु शब्द से इस अमावस्या को मौनी अमावस्या कहा जाने लगा। एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार इस दिन मौन रहकर ईश्वर की साधना की जाती है, इसलिए इसे मौनी अमावस्या कहते हैं। इस बार यह तिथि शनिवार को होने के कारण इसका धार्मिक और ज्योतिष महत्व और भी बढ़ जाता है।

There is a belief behind calling this Amavasya Tithi 'Mauni' that on this auspicious date Manu Rishi was born and with the word Manu, this Amavasya came to be known as Mauni Amavasya. According to another belief, worship of God is done by keeping silence on this day, hence it is called Mauni Amavasya. This time, due to this date being on Saturday, its religious and astrological importance increases even more.
