Auf der Schiffsreise von Honolulu nach Australien wird Charlie Chan von einem inkognito reisenden Beamten des US-Schatzamtes um Hilfe gebeten. Er soll einen spektakulären Raub aufklären, doch kurze Zeit später findet man den Amerikaner erstochen auf. Der Meisterdetektiv beginnt mit seinen Ermittlungen. Um dem Mörder zu finden bleibt nur wenig Zeit, in Kürze soll das Schiff in Samoa anlegen.
