Federal senators and environment groups are calling for an urgent inquiry into land clearing in the Northern Territory, after hundreds of hectares of tropical savanna were destroyed for cotton crops, in some cases without a permit. But growers and the Northern Territory government have defended their actions, and say the industry is expanding sustainably.
