अमावस्या के दिन श्रद्धालु पवित्र नदियों और सरोवरों में आस्था की डुबकी लगाते हैं. इसके बाद पूजा, जप, तप और दान आदि किया जाता है. इतना ही नहीं, इस दिन प्रवाहित जलधारा में तिलांजलि करना पुण्यकारी माना जाता है. इस दिन तर्पण और पिंडदान आदि करने से पितरों को मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है. अमावस्या के दिन दान का भी विशेष महत्व है. ऐसी मान्यता है कि अमावस्या के दिन दान करने से व्यक्ति को अमोघ फल की प्राप्ति होती है. साथ ही घर में सुख-समृद्धि आती है. अतः अमावस्या के दिन इन चीजों का दान करना चाहिए.
