between the ages of 45 and 64 to try and predict their risk
of developing cardiovascular disease in the next decade.
The results of the genetic tests differed
from standard criteria like family history, blood
pressure, body mass index and smoking status. .
Doctors found that 13% of cases
required a change to the health
management of the patient. .
'The Guardian' reports that the findings could usher
in predictive genetic testing used to identify people
with the highest risk for several common conditions.
90% of doctors who responded to a questionnaire at the end of the study said they could incorporate the genetic risk tool into their routine care.
The doctors involved suggested that
the new technology could be adopted
into their practice with no practical barriers. .
The Heart study has shown us that this
kind of genomic testing has the potential
to transform the way we manage
cardiovascular disease in primary care, Prof Ahmet Fuat, Chief investigator
of the Heart study, via 'The Guardian'.
Genomic testing improves how we identify
those patients who most need preventive
measures, closer management,
and treatment, and helps us target
the right interventions to them, Prof Ahmet Fuat, Chief investigator
