‘World’s dirtiest man’ who refused to wash for 70 years dies aged 94

An Iranian man, known as the “world’s dirtiest man,” has died at the age of 94 years old. The man, known as Amou Haji or Uncle Haji, chose not to wash for 60 years as he was afraid he could get sick from soap and water. Haji died in the small town of Dejah where he lived shortly after bathing for the first time in 60 years. A report from IRNA notes that Haji had “emotional setbacks in his youth” which influenced his choice not to wash himself. Haji reportedly smoked cigarettes and his skin was covered in “soot and pus” after years of not bathing. He did not have any relatives but was taken care of by his community and lived between a hole in the ground and a brick shack. He told The Tehran Times in 2014 that his favorite meal was a porcupine. According to Iranian media outlets, there was a documentary made about him in 2013 called The Strange Life of Amou Haji.
