आज छठ पूजा में खरना का दिन है। छठ महापर्व के दूसरे दिन खरना होता है। यह कार्तिक मास की पंचमी तिथि को नहाय खाय के बाद आता है। खरना खास होता है क्योंकि व्रती इसमें दिनभर व्रत रखकर रात में प्रसाद ग्रहण करते हैं। खरना को लोहंडा भी कहा जाता है। खरना में गुड़ और चावल की खीर ‘रसिया’ बनाकर भोग लगाया जाता है। छठ पर्व पर सूर्यदेव का पूजन कर उन्हें अर्घ्य दिया जाता है। खरना का प्रसाद गुड़ की खीर बनाने के लिए खास इंतजाम किए जाते हैं, इसके लिए आम की लकड़ी और मिट्टी के चूल्हे का प्रयोग किया जाता है।छठ का पर्व सिर्फ एक व्रत नहीं है, बल्कि एक कठिन तपस्या होता है। इसमें नहाय-खाय के बाद पहला दिन खरना का आता है। दूसरे दिन शाम को अर्घ्य और तीसरे दिन सुबह अर्घ्य देकर पारण किया जाता है। व्रत रखने वाली महिलाएं बहुत पवित्रता के साथ व्रत करती हैं और उन्हें परवैतिन कहा जाता है। छठ में खरना का विशेष महत्व है क्योंकि इस दिन प्रसाद ग्रहण करने के बाद व्रत करने वाले व्यक्ति छठ पूजा पूर्ण होने के बाद ही अन्न-जल ग्रहण करता है।

Special arrangements are made for making Kharna's prasad, jaggery kheer, for which mango wood and earthen stove are used. The festival of Chhath is not just a fast, but a hard penance. In this, after bathing and eating, the first day comes of Kharna. Paran is done by offering Arghya in the evening on the second day and Arghya in the morning on the third day. The women observing the fast observe the fast with great purity and are called Parvaitin. Kharna has special significance in Chhath, because on this day, after consuming prasad, a person who observes a fast takes food and water only after the completion of Chhath Puja.
