A rare alert was issued urging residents across northern parts of Japan to seek shelter as North Korea launched a missile over the country for the first time in five years. South Korea and Japan have both condemned Pyongyang’s apparent test launch. Tokyo says the rocket fired on the morning of October 4, 2022, soared some 1,000km (620 miles) overhead and splashed down in waters about 3,000km (1,860 miles) east of Japan.
