The company
The Camden Watch Company is an independent British watch brand based in the heart of Camden Town with a passion for designing great watches, taking inspiration from the industrial heritage of Camden and beyond.
Having trained in Switzerland as a watch and jewellery designer, Anneke Short has been designing watches for well over a decade, along with her husband and co-founder Jerome, born and bred in the Swiss watch valley of La Chaux-de-Fonds, the very town where we are sourcing our automatic movements. We have two stores in London, and through our online store send watches all over the world.
The design
Coming in at ø 38 mm, the No.274 is firmly a unisex watch. The two-piece case, featuring varying finishes from the high polished bezel to the brushed side, is slim enough to slip under the cuff of a shirt but large enough to still feel substantial. The dial is the perfect combination of contemporary design with vintage inspiration. Classic enough to wear with a suit, edgy enough to dress down with a t-shirt and trainers.
Old meets new. Past meets present. The fusion of the then and the now that is so engrained into everything that we do here at The Camden Watch Company.
The guilloché lines are inspired by the criss-crossing ironwork of the imposing gaswork structures that can be found along the canal from Kings Cross to Camden. These structures are huge. Giant, imposing, monolithic like buildings that are robust and strong in design and yet somehow still elegant, refined even.
The collection comprises a Swiss made quartz edition and a Swiss made automatic. It is also the moment we finally release a watch that has been requested time and time again, the Memento Mori automatic edition. As Spinal Tap would put it, the No.274 is ‘Camden’ turned up to 11.
The movement
Although we currently use some Swiss made movements in our collection, this is our first Swiss made watch, and we couldn't be more excited. The quartz edition will use a Ronda, and the automatic will house a Sellita movement, harking from the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The dials of the two versions both take inspiration form the same ideas but are clearly different, part of the same family but with neither being a copy of the other.
