That's 0.03% lower than in 2020.
Comparatively, the United States' and Japan's fertility rates in 2021 were 1.6 and 1.3, respectively.
CNN reports that countries must have a fertility rate of 2.1 to maintain a population.
Rates higher than 2.1 indicate population growth.
CNN reports that South Korea's fertility rate has been declining since 2015.
In 2020, the country documented
more deaths than births.
