These dramatic photos show a wind turbine catching fire - spreading thick black smoke across a city. Plumes of smoke was seen rising from the turbine shortly after 7am this morning (Aug 3). The turbine was still rotating as the fire spread, and an area of grassland nearby also caught fire. The 125cm (410ft) turbine is the oldest in Hull, East Yorks., being constructed in 2008. It was situated near the former headquarters of chemicals firm Croda. Locals posted on social media to warn others about the 'huge fire', and residents have been told to close their windows. Sean Casey told the BBC: "We started evacuating just for safety, and then the flames started. "It was quite horrendous to watch. The flames got quite intense. "We were fearful that it might drop. We could see the bits dropping, all the cars have got debris on them." Humberside Fire and Rescue said: "We are receiving multiple calls regarding a fire involving the wind turbine on Oak Road fields between Clough Road and Sutton Fields in Hull. "Crews are in attendance." A spokesperson for Croda, which erected the turbines, said: "We can confirm that we are aware of an incident at the Cargill site in Oak Road, Hull, involving a wind turbine fire. "On 30 June 2022, Croda International Plc completed the sale of the majority of its Performance Technologies and Industrial Chemicals businesses to Cargill, which included the Hull site. "We have been in contact with Cargill and have offered support. There have been no reported injuries. "Croda erected the wind turbine in 2008 and maintained the turbine using third party wind turbine experts."
