RBI first introduced the 5 rupee coin in 1992.But now RBI has stopped making them.Actually there are 2 reasons for this...
1. Heavy weight and high manufacturing cost.
Before 2009, 5 rupee coins were generally made from cupro nickel and ferritic stainless steel, which were heavier than today's nickel brass 5 rupee coins and also cost more to make them.
2. Smuggling
In the year 2009, it was reported that razor blades were made from 5 rupees coins in Bangladesh.Razor Blade Manufacturer Companies of Bangladesh used to make 6 razor blades from just one coin of 5 rupees and sell each razor blade for 2 rupees.But it was completely illegal under the Coinage Act, due to which RBI stopped making these coins.....
