In accordance with traditions dating back to the fourth century, it is believed that it houses two of the holiest sites in Christianity- the place where Jesus was crucified, also known as Calvary or Golgotha, and Jesus's empty tomb, where it is believed that he was buried and resurrected. Several Christian denominations and secular entities share control of the church itself, simultaneously, in complicated arrangements that have largely remained the same for more than 160 years, and some for much longer still. There are three main denominations which share property over parts of the church, namely the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Apostolic churches, and to a lesser extent the Coptic Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, and Ethiopian Orthodox churches. There are three architectural styles in the city: Romanesque architecture, Baroque architecture, and Byzantine architecture.
