- There is some evidence that suggests that the personal table fork was invented in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, where they were in common use by the 4th century, although their origins may go back to Ancient Greece. By the 9th century, records show that a similar utensil known as a barjyn was used in some elite circles of Persia to prepare food, but only in limited quantities.
The origin of
Despite the fact that the personal table fork may have its origins in ancient Greece, it is most likely that it was invented during the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, where they had become a common household item by the 4th century. It is recorded that in some elite circles of Persia, as early as the 9th century, a similar utensil known as a barjyn was being used in limited quantities.
Hands
The traditional way to use a fork in the United States is to start out with a knife in your right hand and a fork in your left hand as you use it. As soon as you have cut your food with your knife, you set it down and switch to your fork with your right hand, thereby completing the "cut-and-switch" motion.

To form a plate, take your non-dominant hand and place it palm up with the palm facing up. Once you have made a fork with your index and middle fingers on your dominant hand, place it on the plate and touch the plate with your fingers acting as the tines of the fork a couple of times as you move it on the plate.
