Awl Together Leather is Canada's first and only queer- and woman-owned shoe-repair and custom-leather workshop. Co-owner Tess walks us through how she updates a pair of inherited beige heeled ballet shoes to better fit her wardrobe. She starts by dyeing the shoes from beige to dark green, then begins the complex process of replacing the sole. Tess says this sole replacement is more difficult than most because she is converting the shoe from heel to wedge. This requires her to balance the shoe with new leather heel wedges before she can apply the new sole. Once she's applied the sole, she sands it to the exact shape of the shoe, making it like new.
