Twelve ballistic missiles were launched from outside Iraq to target Erbil, the capital of Iraq's autonomous northern Kurdish region on Sunday, the state news agency quoted the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism in Kurdistan as saying.

According to preliminary reports, the missile attack on Erbil came from Iranian territory. Some Iranian news agencies confirmed that six long-range ballistic missiles were sent to the US Consulate in Erbil, Iraq, NEXTA reported on Sunday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility or further details available. A US State Department spokesperson called it an "outrageous attack" but said no Americans were hurt and there was no damage to US government facilities in Erbil.
