India on alert as Omicron tally reaches 5; states ramp up Covid-19 testing

Central and state governments continue to be on alert over the Omicron threat. India reported its first Omicron cases on December 2, both of which were from Karnataka. The first patient, a 66-year-old, came to the state from South Africa on November 20 and left India seven days later, according to data shared by the Karnataka government. The second patient, a 46-year-old, had no travel history. The third case of Omicron in India was reported in Gujarat's Jamnagar on Saturday. The patient is 72 years old and came to Jamnagar via South Africa two days ago, officials said on Saturday. The fourth case of the newly detected Omicron Covid variant was detected in Maharashtra's Dombivli. The 33-year-old patient is a South Africa returnee. On Sunday, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant in the city.
