Harvard professor Steven Levitsky compares the modern Republican party to the far-right ethnonationalist groups of Europe, with the key difference being those parties only get a mild portion of the vote. “You can’t be a member of the Republican party in good standing if you don’t adhere to the big lie,” the “How Democracies Die” co-author said during a conversation with Salon’s Dean Obeidallah. He goes on to explain how the party has grown more extreme in recent years and why they will follow Trump on “whatever authoritarian destination he takes them.”
