Maharashtra: Tomato Farmers In Nashik Dump Produce On Roads As Procurement Prices Down To Rs 2/kg

Farmers in Nashik & Aurangabad dumped their tomatoes on the road on August 27. This comes after prices of the vegetable were slashed to Rs 2-3 per kg in the wholesale market. However, reportedly, in the retail market, tomatoes were getting sold for Rs 25-30 per kg. The farmers demand better rates from wholesalers. As reported by Mint, according to the APMC data, the August wholesale price of tomatoes stood at Rs 750.63 per quintal in Maharashtra. Last year in the same month, tomatoes were priced at Rs 2,037.77/quintal. In July 2021, they were being sold for Rs 1,044.67 per quintal. In Nashik, a hub of India's largest tomato market, tomatoes were being sold at Rs 664.19 per quintal in August.
