Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. Nagdevta is worshiped on this date. The lord of Panchami Tithi is Nag, so worshiping him on this day averts evil and brings good luck. It is also said in the Garuda Purana that on Nagpanchami, all the wishes are fulfilled by performing the pictorial worship of the main Nagdevta including Anant in the house. It has been a tradition that the snake deity is worshiped on this day. Many people worship Nagdevta with family and try to feed milk. But it hurts the serpents. Many organizations working for wild animals have certified that offering kumkum, akshat, abir-gulal on the snake deity causes them pain.

श्रावण मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की पंचमी तिथि नाग पंचमी मनाई जाती है। इस तिथि पर नागदेवता की पूजा की जाती है। पंचमी तिथि के स्वामी नाग हैं इसलिए इस दिन उनका पूजन करने से अनिष्ट टलता है और शुभ की प्राप्ति होती है। गरुड़ पुराण में भी कहा गया है कि नागपंचमी पर घर में अनंत सहित प्रमुख नागदेवता का सचित्र पूजन करने से समस्त मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं। परंपरा रही है कि इस दिन नाग देवता का पूजन किया जाता है। कई लोग सपरिवार नागदेवता का पूजन करते हैं और दूध पिलाने का प्रयास करते हैं। मगर इससे नागों को कष्ट पहुंचता है। वन्य प्राणियों के लिए कार्यरत कई संस्थाओं ने इस बात को प्रमाणित किया है कि नाग देवता पर कुंकुम, अक्षत, अबीर-गुलाल चढ़ाने से उन्हें तकलीफ होती है।
