'China Celebrates Communist Party's 100th Anniversary in EXTRAVAGANT Ceremony'

China's ruling communist party celebrated its 100th anniversary on Thursday with a lavish ceremony in Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing.

Thousands of military personnel and citizens attended the event.

President Xi Jinping addressed the crowds and congratulated the country's 92 million party members.

He said the goal for the party's second century would be to develop the country into a "modern socialist power”.

The CCP was founded in 1921 by a group of Chinese revolutionaries.

The party has ruled China single-handedly for more than 70 years since Mao Zedong led them to power in 1949.

Resistance to communist rule is fiercely suppressed, as the world saw in 1989 - the Tiananmen Square Massacre saw a deadly crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing.

Thousands are thought to have been killed by government troops.

The party is also accused of human rights abuses against the minority Uighur population.

China is one of a small number of communist countries left in the world despite having the world’s second largest economy.
