Panic gripped the residents at Lunapahi village in Balasore district after some heavy object, believed to be a part of a missile fell in a nearby farmland close to human settlement. The object landed with a deafening noise, waking the villagers on Wednesday night. It is suspected that these objects could be pieces of a missile test-fired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.
The impact of the fallen object left an 8-ft-deep crater with clueless villagers running for cover after getting jolted from their sleep due to the loud noise. The incident took place at the village under Jayadev Kasaba gram Panchayat in Sadar Block. This village is situated in the periphery of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) facility in Chandipur.
Panic-stricken locals suspect that the object could be fuselage of a missile test fired from the testing centre.
The locals of the area have demanded that the DRDO declare the vulnerable areas as restricted zones to avoid such incidents.
