"Spending Cut on Key Welfare Schemes in Budget, May Lead to Severely Disjointed Economic Recovery"
As the dust begins to settle on the Union Budget, what has stood out is the slash almost every welfare scheme has seen – spending is down on key projects like NREGA, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme, Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana etc.
Aside from this, spending on categories like Education, nutrition ( under Health), other employment generation programmes and budgets for procurement and distribution of contraceptives to states have also been cut.
Where have the biggest cuts happened and what are the consequences of that for India’s poorest sections that depend on those schemes ? Here’s Mitali Mukherjee in conversation with Yamini Aiyar, President and Chief Executive of the Centre for Policy Research ( CPR), on the consequences of cutting spending on these welfare schemes and why it will lead to a severely disjointed economic recovery.
