Modern-Day Slavery: Why Are Brick Kiln Workers Living in Inhumane Conditions?

An estimated 12 million Indian citizens are working as bonded labour in over 200,000 brick kilns across the country, claims the National Struggle Committee for Brick Kiln Workers (NSCBKW). The NSCBKW, an umbrella network of Trade Unions and Civil Society Organizations working for the rights of brick kiln workers in the country, released its National Demand Charter in New Delhi on Wednesday.

In this interview with The Wire, Sudhir Kumar Katiyar, Convenor of NSCBKW, and Trilochan Puji of the Shramik Adhikar Sangathan explain the demands of the workers and suggest measures to provide them with humane work environments and formalise their jobs.
