Angus Crowne is the self-described Godfather of Uke-Billy-Punk-Rock, and the songs on Let’s Fly supports this assertion. The album is filled with quirky post-punk music.
Performing since his early teens, Angus Crowne is an accomplished musician and concert producer who has worked with QUEEN, Boy George, Fatboy Slim, Spacehog, Paul Oakenfold, Chris Thompson and many more artists in music and entertainment.
When asked in a recent interview how Angus Crowne and The Family Jewels materialized, Angus stated "As we start to get older, especially in our late 40's, society seems to want you to slow down and let the youth have their turn. I say bullshit! I still have a lot to say."
About Uke-Billy Punk: "It's a new genre - mine. My music is ultimately about honesty and truth. And if I get to piss a few people off along the way, then my work here is done."
"It's about where I am in my life right now. It's about getting older, wiser, but at times feeling frustrated and bitter. The message in all of my songs aren't too difficult to figure out. Some are tongue-in-cheek, some are hard, but all of the songs are me - and that has made working on them very special."
Crowne doesn’t so much sing, as talk-sing these eleven songs. The album’s title track, for instance, is a slightly funky, somewhat world music influenced piece. As Crowne monologues his way through a keyboard and guitar driven track, the group sounds a bit like Tom Waits during his Swordfishtrombones phase. Lyrically, the song is philosophical. “Why is it so wrong,” Crowne asks at one point, “to dream out loud?”
Categorizing Angus Crowne and the Family Jewels is nearly impossible. It is a jaunty singer/songwriter album, which is unlike any singer/songwriter album you’ve ever heard before. Crowne is a true individualist, and his collection of songs consistently expresses his individuality. He is a sort of post-punk artist, even though nothing on this album sounds particularly punk. Or rock & roll, for that matter. You may not fully embrace what Angus Crowne and the Family Jewels do, but you also cannot ignore it. It’s unique and unusual, like a rare bird. And for that distinction alone, Crowne deserves much credit.
The Family Jewels consist of music producer and guitarist Gavin Ross, drummer Tino Marrufo, and bassist / guitarist Rod Kashani.
