The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on foreign officials and firms for human rights violations.
In an International Human Rights Day statement on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. was targeting 17 officials from China, Russia, El Salvador and Jamaica as well as their immediate family members.
Pompeo elaborated that Chinese individuals were sanctioned over "gross violations of human rights" of (fah-loon) Falun Gong practitioners.
The sanctions also cover a Chechen leader and individuals from Haiti as well as Yemen.
