U.S. House passes two resolutions for stronger alliance with Seoul

U.S. Congressmen unanimously passed two resolutions on Wednesday... reaffirming the strong Seoul-Washington alliance.
This comes at a critical time when the U.S. is soon to have a new administration,... raising the need for dialogue on the Korean Peninsula and a reinforcing of the alliance.

U.S. House of Representatives passed unanimously on Wednesday... two resolutions calling for a stronger South Korea-U.S. alliance.
One of the resolutions, introduced by Democrat Tom Suozzi of New York,... says Seoul and Washington need to work closely for peace, security and economic prosperity.
The other resolution,... introduced by Democrat Ami Bera of California and Republican Ted Yoho of Florida,... recognizes the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean war.
The latter says that the alliance with Seoul serves as one of the "lynchpins of United States foreign policy in Northeast Asia."
The passage of both resolutions was welcomed on Thursday by Seoul's foreign ministry.
"Not just one, but two resolutions were passed on the same day,... which shows that both sides of the aisle in the House of Representatives... recognize the importance of the South Korea-U.S. alliance."
When it comes to North Korea, an American expert has called on the next administration to engage in dialogue with the North Korean leader's sister, Kim Yo-jong.
The Director for the Center for the National Interest,... Harry Kazianis,... suggested in a webinar on Thursday that working-level talks involving Kim Yo-jong could lead to meaningful negotiations.
If Seoul were to play a mediating role, he said, those talks could be held at the demilitarized zone.
In terms of defense, a three-way meeting was held virtually on Thursday between high-level military officials from Seoul, Washington and Tokyo.
There, the Chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Won In-choul, stressed the importance of trilateral cooperation for denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
His American and Japanese counterparts, General Mark Milley and General Koji Yamazaki agreed on the need to work together for peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
