Baisakhi 2020: Date, History, Significance & Celebrations Associated With Punjabi New Year Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi or Baisakhi is a harvest festival which marks the Sikh New Year. It marks the first day of the month of Vaisakha in the Hindu calendar. This year Baisakhi is being celebrated on April 13. In Sikhism, Baisakhi also marks the formation of Khalsa Panth started by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Vaisakhi is also known as Vaishakhi or Punjabi New Year. It is known under different names such as 'Rongali Bihu' in Assam, 'Naba Barsha' in Bengal, 'Puthandu' in Tamil Nadu, 'Vishu' in Kerala and 'Vaishakha' in Bihar. The Sikh community living across countries celebrate the day with the same grandeur. However, this year, celebrations have been curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
