Ram Mohan Roy, a social reformer who was bestowed the title of Raja (King) was born on May 22, 1772. Roy was given many titles in his lifetime but he is remembered for his work in abolishing the Hindu practice of Sati – a widow consigning her life to the funeral pyre along with her dead husband’s body. From being a multi-linguist who was interested in religious doctrines to emerging as a leading educationist and social reformer, Raja Ram Mohan Roy donned many hats in his 61 years.
