A three-time Olympic gold medallist and a global hockey icon, Balbir Singh Sr passed away at the age of 95. Singh is celebrated as one of the greatest ever hockey players and was often called the modern-day Dhyanchand for his goal-scoring streaks and ability to kill opposition every time he stepped into the inner circle. Singh was part of the Indian teams that clinched gold medals at 1948, 1952 and 1956 Olympic Games. He captained the side in the last of three gold-medal-winning campaigns.
