Eighty years ago: the Queen's first address to the nation

Eighty years ago today, a 14-year-old Princess Elizabeth delivered her first speech to the nation, joined by her sister Princess Margaret. Her address was aimed at the children evacuated during the Second World War, who were sent away from danger by their families to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada or South Africa.

In April 2020, the Queen recalled this message during her speech to the nation amid the coronavirus pandemic, when she said:

“We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes and sent away for their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do.” Report by Bassaneseg.
