In the final kilometer, the sprinter is taken by his teammates, sometimes up to five to six riders who are at the top of the pack (this is called a sprinter lead-out) and produce their effort and then depart one after the other. The objective of this lead-out is to get the sprinter in the best position to compete in the sprint as a launching pad.
