Shopper 'scammed' after buying king prawns with metals hidden inside to make them heavier

A mother was furious after she was allegedly scammed by a seafood vendor by hiding metal nails in prawns to make them heavier.

Rawiporn Imarrom, who owns a sandwich stall, revealed the trick after she bought the seafood from a market in Bangkok, Thailand on August 21.

She was cleaning the king prawns for dinner when she found four nails stuffed inside their long claws.

One of the nails was placed inside the prawn's claws to keep them long and steady, so they appeared fresh and attractive to buyers. While the extra weight also pushed up the price.

The disappointed mother said: "My family and I were disheartened about our special dinner when we saw nails inside the prawns. The market is well-known for its seafood and I cannot tolerate the vendor's bad tricks."

Rawiporn said that after her bad experience at the popular market, she wanted to warn other people about the scam.

She said that the seafood stall - which did not have a regular pitch - had fooled her into buying seven king prawns for 1,900 Bath (around 46 GBP).

Rawiporn added that the vendor who scammed her even tried to charge her more by claiming his seafood was fresher than the others.

She reported the vendor to the market administrator's office who tracked them down and ordered her to return the customer's money.

However, Rawiporn said she will be more wary in buying seafood from the place again.

She said: "I'm not sure if I can still trust them after this. They are so popular so how can they bear to damage their reputation for some quick money?"
