Russian President Vladimir Putin says he's ready to send police to help resolve the political crisis in Belarus if protests there turn violent.
His remarks came during an interview with Russia's state television that was broadcast on Thursday.
"Alexander Lukashenko asked me to create a reserve police force for him. So I did. We also agreed that it would not be used unless the situation gets out of control."
He also added the two had agreed there's no need to use the reserve at the moment.
Large-scale protests have been ongoing in Belarus for weeks following a controversial election on August 9th, which handed Lukashenko his sixth term with over 80 percent of the vote.
Following Putin's remarks, the head of NATO warned Russia against intervention, saying Belarus is a sovereign and independent state and nobody should interfere.
