Greenpeace warns against sinking oil spill ship in Mauritania

Greenpeace has issued a stark warning against sinking the MV Wakashio amid concerns it is in a whale nursing grounds where the world's largest mammals migrate from Antarctica. They say sinking the vessel there is the "worst" option the Mauritian government could have chosen and that doing so also poses a threat to the nearby French island of Reunion. All because towing it to a shipyard to be scrapped would be "more expensive." Happy Khambule, Greenpeace Africa's Senior Climate and Energy Campaign Manager, said: “Out of all available options, the Mauritian government is choosing the worst one. Sinking this vessel would risk biodiversity and contaminate the ocean with large quantities of heavy metal toxins, threatening other areas as well, notably the French island of La Reunion."
