Fearless children run through deep red dust devil tornado in Indonesia

This is the terrifying moment children run through a huge red dust devil whirlwind that formed while they were playing in the field.

The youngster were riding bikes and playing football in the dusty field when the raging mini tornado started to form in Depok City,Indonesia.

The dust devil sucked in the dry red dirt on the surface of the field and started to gain size. The children gathered around to watch - with some of them even entering the spinning vortex of the cloud.

Onlooker Jevry Tanjung said: "The children immediately entered the dust after seeing it. Instead of being afraid, they looked like they were having fun."

Jevry added that the field is frequented by children and adults to fly kites in the afternoon when the wind is strongest.

No one was hurt by the dust devil which dissipated after a few minutes.

Dust devils are rotating masses of air which are relatively short-lived whirlwinds. They are usually harmless, but occasionally can cause some damage to both people and property.

They are formed when the hot sun heats the ground and the warmer air above it starts to rise, creating an area of low pressure below.

Air rushes to fill the low pressure, which then circulates like a whirlwind and picks up dried dirt from the surface as the air warms and rises quickly. They dissipate when all the air becomes cooler.
