Veterinarians at Taipei Zoo have created several soft toys in the shape of baby pandas for new mother Yuan Yuan, in an effort to help her to maintain a maternal bond with her newborn baby, which has had to be kept in an incubator. Yuan Yuan, a giant panda gifted by China to Taiwan, was unable to nurse and feed her newborn who suffered a minor back injury soon after birth. The unnamed female cub born on June 28 is the second baby born to Yuan Yuan, who earlier produced a daughter Yuan Zai in 2013, the first giant panda born in Taiwan.
