Separate galleries had been made for men and women in the crowd. Rajiv Gandhi first went towards men's section and then headed towards the gallery where women were cheering for him. Among the crowd was a young woman of around 30, who moved towards Rajiv Gandhi purposefully. A woman police constable, later identified as Anusuya, tried to stop the woman but Rajiv Gandhi intervened and directing to let her cross the fence.
श्रीपेरंबदूर में रैली की गहमागहमी थी. राजीव गांधी के आने में देरी हो रही थी. बार-बार ऐलान हो रहा था कि राजीव किसी भी वक्त रैली के लिए पहुंच सकते हैं. पिछले छह महीने से पक रही साजिश अपने अंजाम के बेहद करीब थी. एक महिला सब इंस्पेक्टर ने उसे दूर रहने को कहा पर राजीव गांधी ने उसे रोकते हुए कहा कि सबको पास आने का मौका मिलना चाहिए. उन्हें नहीं पता था कि वो जनता को नहीं मौत को पास बुला रहे हैं.
