কীর্তন সংগীত তিনটি তালে গাওয়া হয়, দ্রুত, মধ্য এবং বিলম্বিত। কোলকাতা শহরের পত্তনের আগে, কীর্তন ছিল সম্পূর্ণ রূপে গ্রামীণ সংস্কৃতির অংশ। ১৮০০ শতকের গোড়ার দিকে কোলকাতার পত্তনের পর পাঁচালী ও কীর্তন শহুরে সংস্কৃতির অংশ হয়ে পরে। ১৯৪৭ সালের পূর্বে হিন্দু মুসলিম উভয়েই কীর্তন সংগিত শুনত।
