U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says Washington's negotiations with Pyeongyang over the regime's denuclearization will resume now North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is back from his almost three-week long absence.
Pompeo also said shots fired across the inter-Korean border by North Korea on Sunday were likely "accidental".

With North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reemerging into the spotlight for the first time in weeks,... U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has reaffirmed Washington's stance on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking to ABC News' This Week on Sunday,... Pompeo was asked if he knew what Kim was doing during the period he was laying low.
Pompeo responded by saying there wasn't much he could share,... and regardless,... Washington's mission remains the same, namely "to convince the North Koreans to give up their nuclear weapons, to verify the same, and to then create a brighter future for the North Korean people".
Pompeo added the mission has been something President Trump has been focused on since he became president,... and something Washington will continue to work on.
Pompeo was also asked for his take on the multiple shots fired by North Korea across its border with South Korea.
Pompeo said he believed the shots were "accidental",... adding the South Korean side returned fire,... but there was "no loss of life on either side".
The two Koreas exchanged gunfire around a rural guard post on Sunday,... raising tensions just a couple of days after North Korean state media showed Kim Jong-un visiting a factory.
The report covered Kim's first public appearance since April 11th.
