President Moon Jae-in says South Korea will overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.... just as it overcame the massive forest fires that swept through Gangwon-do Province last year.
He visited the city of Gangneung on Sunday one of the areas hardest hit by the fires on the occasion of Arbor Day here.
Moon said that it was an example of the entire country coming together to overcome a crisis.
He also pointed out the need for swift restoration efforts.
Although we are practicing social distancing due to COVID-19, tree planting and reforestation are things we must keep doing and not stop. Even though the people are suffering because of COVID-19, I ask you to take active part in restoration efforts by planting or donating trees.
President Moon and the First Lady planted seven pine trees, joined by some 40 people,... including firefighters and residents who took part in the rescue efforts.
The president also offered words of comfort to the people impacted by the fires and thanked the firefighters and civil servants for their efforts.
The fires raged along the coastal regions in Gangwon-do Province in early April in 2019 causing damages across an area of some 28 square kilometers.
Moon said that the government plans to complete restoration by 2022.
