Invasive Snails Could Be the Key to Saving Coffee Crops
  • 4 years ago
While you may not want to think about snails in your morning brew, they could be key to saving coffee. The disease known as coffee leaf rust has become increasingly problematic for coffee producers in recent years. But a team of researchers from the University of Michigan have suggested a very slimy solution. Just one snail can gobble up 30% of the rust spores on an infected coffee tree leaf. But researchers admit that spreading an invasive species into foreign ecosystems isn't a great idea. The larger lesson here is that natural problems can often be solved by natural solutions. At this point, the snails' diet is interesting, but more research needs to be done.
