Judge Reopens EMI's Lawsuit
Against Kanye West.
West filed a lawsuit against
the music publisher over a
contract dispute in Jan. 2019.
The rapper claimed his contract with EMI and Roc-A-Fella Records has no time limit, and in California, where he resides, personal contracts longer than seven years amount to "servitude.".
EMI claims California's "servitude" law doesn't apply
because New York state law governs the contract.
According to TMZ, West and EMI struck
"an agreement in principle" in September, but EMI's lawyers recently filed a motion announcing, "unfortunately the parties have been unable to finalize the terms of the settlement agreement.".
The judge presiding over the case signed off on the publisher's request to reopen the suit.
West's contract will remain
in effect until he creates a
specific number of songs for the publisher.
The rapper requested that the contract be cut off as of 2010 in order to retrieve the rights to his music between then and now
