Amid protests over his disputed re-election last month, the Bolivian President, who's been in power for nearly 14 years,... has resigned.
Our Kim bo-kyoung tells us more.
Bolivian president, Evo Morales resigned on Sunday local time,... after weeks of fierce protests asking him to step down.
"To my brothers and sisters of Bolivia, the whole world, I want to inform you from Lauca N, I'm here with the vice president and minister of health, that I have decided after listening to my friends at CONALCAM and the Bolivian Workers' Center and also listening to the Catholic Church to resign my position as president."
There have been weeks of fierce protests over the results of the October 20th presidential election. Bolivia's armed forces decided not to "confront the people" to whom they have a duty to ensure peace,... and eventually the military itself asked Morales to renounce his presidential mandate.
The presidential election on October 20,... looked like it would go to a second round of voting,... after the preliminary results showed Morales slightly ahead of his opponent,... but after a sudden 24-hour pause in the counting, Morales's lead had jumped significantly, giving him enough of a lead to win outright.
As the suspicion grew over the election,... the Organization of American States, issued a report after an audit,... and revealed there was some manipulation in the election,... saying its results should be annulled.
Morales agreed to hold the presidential election again with a new electoral body,... but Bolivians asked him to step down to restore stability... eventually forcing him to leave office.
