U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has not agreed to scrap tariffs on Chinese goods.
“They’d like to have a rollback. I haven’t agreed to anything. China would like to get somewhat of a rollback, not a complete rollback because they know I won’t do it.”
His comments come after the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced on Thursday that the two countries had agreed on a deal to start rolling back tariffs in phases, easing the U.S-China trade war.
Washington and Beijing have been working to sign a so-called "phase one" trade deal.
Trump hopes to address Beijing’s trade practices, including forced technology transfers and its securing of more Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural goods.
Both sides have imposed billions of dollars of tariffs on each other's goods so far.
