New for Season 2 and following successful implementation in Formula E is “Attack mode”

In the short history of Formula-E electric car racing, the sport has shown it has a benevolent cause to help change the way the world relies on fossil fuels. I once wrote that it's the only sport that can actually change the planet we all live on. Not to ruin their reputation, but they also want to sell tickets and grow their fan base.

To that end, Season 5 marked two big debuts to the racing. First is the Generation 2 car, which looks and feels different and doesn’t need to be switched mid-race (something that happened during the first four seasons). Second is Attack Mode, a new twist that has the fans in mind.

“We wanted to create a new experience for the viewers, bringing new technologies that at the same time, forcing people to remain engaged,” said Jerome Hiquet, Marketing Director for Formula-E.

What is Attack Mode? Basically an opportunity to run a few laps with 25kz more power. About an hour before a race, they are told when and where they can drive through an “Activation Zone” outside the normal racing line. Gamers, think Super Mario KART and the Power Up feature. Once a car goes through “the zone,” they can use the extra power to go faster.
