Supreme Court rules parliament prorogation was illegal
  • 5 years ago
The Supreme Court has declared that Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks was unlawful. A panel of 11 justices gave their decision in a ruling on the legality of the Prime Minister's advice to the Queen to prorogue Parliament until October 14. Announcing the result, Lady Hale said: "The court is bound to conclude, therefore, that the decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue Parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification."
