Former President Park Geun-hye not to appeal court ruling
  • 6 years ago
The Seoul Central District Court says Park Geun-hye has waived her right to an appeal against its ruling in her first trial.
The court, earlier this month, handed the ex-president a prison sentence of 24 years,... and fined her roughly 17 million U.S. dollars.
She was found guilty of 16 offenses, including bribery, abuse of power and leaking state secrets.
The deadline for Park to appeal was last Friday,... however, she did not do so,... and an appeal filed by her sister now loses effect.
Despite her waiver, a second trial on a supplementary indictment begins today.
Park is alleged to have interfered with the 2016 general elections by using illegal opinion polls as a way to nominate candidates friendly to her.
