Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim said that it is too early to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on poverty in the country.

He said time was needed for economic experts and the Economic Planning Unit to give input on the issue.

"It's too early. We need to give space to the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and also utilise economic experts such as professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram and others from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to provide input,"

Anwar, who is the chairperson for the parliamentary caucus for reform and governance was responding to calls for an RCI to scrutinise a United Nations (UN) report claiming that Malaysia was undereporting its poverty numbers.
